Mo's Challenge # 125

Try Something New!

Well, I certainly did do something new! I've been eying  'book cards' for quite some time now.  I loved them, but it seemed as if they'd be so difficult! Thanks to our new Design Team member, Tracy MacDonald, and her wonderfully clear instructions, I decided to give it a try! You can find her tutorial HERE!
I'll definitely be making more of these fun books!

Be patient with me, I have a lot of pictures to show you!

The crazy, bright color scheme was taken right from the Paper Studio DP. This 'book' is an Easter gift for our granddaughter, and she'll love the colors!

This is the inside view. I added the corner trim to finish it off neatly. I also closed mine differently, using  Basic Grey  magnets. I tucked a matching bookmark (using  ribbon of all the different colors) into the strap. I'll be putting a sentiment on a Nesties label and attaching it inside the compartment.  I'll also put in a gift card and some candy.

This view shows the shine of the Spica glitter pens I used on this sweet little fairy.

Another close-up!

A final view of the back binding.

This was a lot of fun, and I hope you'll visit Tracy's blog and give it a try! There are several steps, but none are too difficult or tricky. Really, the hardest thing about this was photographing and blogging it!

Mo's Challenge # 95

Don't Card Me!

This week the challenge at Mo's is "Anything But a Card". That's a theme that always throws me for some reason! I put my thinking cap on and remembered making some Christmas candles last year with my daughter. They're pretty quick and simple to do, so that's what I decided to go with.

This one uses Mo's "Lemon Girl."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This one uses Mo's "Sending Peace."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This is the first one I made, using Mo's "Flower Girl."
The only problem I had was not remembering that you have to use much darker colors than you'd normally use in order to get the effect you want. This turned out much paler than I'd have liked, but with this image, that's not such  a bad thing.

I also made a rings of flowers to fancy the candles up a bit. That took me back to my days as a florist, when I spent my days making wedding bouquets and corsages.

Image: All from Mo's Digital Pencil

Tools: Copics, Tissue paper, Waxed paper, Heat Gun, Wire, Florist Tape, Nellie Snellen embossing leaf punch set, Pillar candle
Embellishments: Flowers from WOC, Ribbon

Instructions

To make one, you adhere tissue paper to a piece of CS. I used Tacky Tape along the edges to secure the tissue. Then I printed off the image, colored it  and cut closely around the  image.
You have to color it darker than you would normally in order to get the right  color on the finished project.
The next step is to place the image where you want it on the candle, then cut a piece of waxed paper big enough to cover the image completely and wrap around to the back of the candle with enough extra to allow you to  hold it tightly against the candle, smoothing out any wrinkles as best you can.  The last step is to hold a heat gun about 6 to 8 inches from the image and carefully pass it back and forth over the image until you notice it getting shiny. When the entire image is shiny, remove the wax paper and check to see if the tissue paper is completely melted into the candle. If there are spots that haven't , replace the wax paper and heat again. Be careful not to use too much heat, or the wax will run and ruin your work.

Well, this challenge wasn't as difficult as I'd thought it would be, so I know you can do it, too!
Make something wonderful and share it with us in Mo's Challenge!

Thanks for looking!

Mo's Challenge # 51

Altered Coasters

This is Paola's last week as our hostess, and she asked for altered projects. I really had to rack my brain for this one! I couldn't get to town to buy anything to use, and then I remembered I had bought some square coasters quite some time ago...all I had to do was remember where I'd put them! After tearing things apart, I found them in a drawer right next to my work desk!

This is a little accordion photo album. I thought it would be fun for our granddaughter to use to put small school pictures in. There are eight pages for photos inside.

( I apologize.... these photos aren't the best quality. It's just been too gloomy here  recently to take photographs in natural light.)

The album  was made by cutting out ovals in two 4" square coasters, one for the front and one for the back. I covered both with the patterned paper, first marking the oval openings and snipping the insides, then gluing it to the coasters and folding and gluing the tabs to the inside. Next I glued the colored images in each of the openings. My next step was to adhere a length of grosgrain ribbon to the back of the front coaster, making sure to leave the left hand tail longer than the right, and then glue another uncut coaster to cover all the 'ugly'!. I did the same to the back, but no ribbon this time.
I cut two pieces of craft card stock 11 1/2" x  3 3/4". These were scored every 3 3/4", folded, and the two middle panels were over-lapped and glued together. The end panels were then glued to the inside of both the front and back covers. I stamped a few swirls and appropriate words on each inside page.
The front and back were decorated, and it was done!
This could be done using any theme. Wouldn't it make a great grandma brag book, or a small remembrance for a special occasion?!
Don't be afraid to ask any questions if I haven't made these directions clear enough!

Mo's Challenge #31

 Flower Child!

Denise, our Challenge hostess for the month, has asked the DT members to create something with the theme of flowers using one of Mo's wonderful images. This should be an easy one for everyone...who doesn't love flowers?!
I needed a card for my granddaughter's 7th birthday, which is at the end of this month. She loves to display the cards I make for her in her room, so I decided to do something a bit special.....an explosion box card.

This was quite an undertaking! The tutorial I followed had the wrong measurements for the box itself, but I made the corrections and forged ahead. The box and top were very easy to make, and went together quickly once I made some adjustments. Decorating it, however, was not an easy task!
I worked on it over the course of several days, an hour here and an hour there. I won't even speculate on the amount of time it took!

I used "I Love Ya Tomorrow", one of my favorite and (I think!) most versatile of Mo's images. I printed her out twice, flipping the second image, colored them both, cut them out and glued them together with a piece of acetate, that was a bit longer than the images, between them. I snipped the bottom of the acetate, bending one side one way and the other in the opposite direction. I slipped the ends through a slit I had made in a card stock and DP panel that would be adhered to the inside bottom of the box once I had finished decorating it with flowers. I created the curved greeting on the computer, again printing two, one for each side.

The daisies were made using a Spellbinders die and flower soft for the centers. The pink flowers are from Wild Orchid Crafts. (Have I said how much I love that site?!). The leaves were made using a Quickcutz  branch die and Martha Stewart's Leaf punch. Flowers and leaves were adhered to strips of acetate with mini glue dots and inserted into slits in the panel.

The box top was the last thing to make. I made a fluffy bow with some sheer, satin-striped ribbon, attached it with Scor-tape and decorated it with more flowers and two butterflies made with an MS punch and decorated with pale pink glitter and some small heart-shaped pink pearls. I used the MS Lattice Border  punch and grosgrain ribbon to give some interest to the sides of the box top. There are more daisies and leaves on the four side panels, too.

Now let's see the wonderful things you'll do this week! Remember, one lucky entrant will be chosen at random to win an image of their choice from Mo's store!
Thanks for stopping by!
